Classification
and Staffing
The County of Santa Barbara’s 4,600 positions have
been classified into 700 different job classifications
and allocated to the County’s 23 different departments.
The Job Class Salary Table lists each job classification and its
salary range. Each job classification is described in the
Job Descriptions section. The number of positions, by classification
and within each department, is detailed in the Position
Allocation section.
The majority of positions are covered by the County’s
civil service system. Department heads, their assistants,
and a small number of other positions are excluded from
the civil service system and are considered “at-will.” The
Civil Service Commission is composed of five commissioners
who are appointed by the Board of Supervisors. The Civil
Service Rules set forth the general personnel operating
guidelines for the County.
The Employee Handbook summarizes the County’s employment
practices and programs but does not supersede the specific
policies of the County.
